Carl Czerny was an Austrian composer born in Vienna in 1791, the year W. A. Mozart died. He start music lessons from a very young age, taking his first piano lessons by his father Wenzel Czerny. Czerny came into contact early on with the greatest musicians of his time. His acquaintance with Beethoven, as well as with Clementi, helped him to develop his piano technique. Among his most important students was Liszt. Czerny experienced the transition in piano art from the style of J. S. Bach – C. Ph. Emmanuel Bach (and later Haydn and Mozart), in the style of late Beethoven and Chopin, in the transition to the virtuoso playing of the Romantic era. He undoubtedly contributed to this transition himself, as a teacher and as a composer.
