Case study Project - Bose Pro

The Skating Club of Boston is the leading figure skating club in New England that has been operating for over 100 years offering high-quality services to families and athletes.
In September 2020, The Skating Club moved to a state-of-the-art facility of 180,000 sq.m. in Norwood, Massachusetts.

The new facility includes three ice rinks - including the Olympic-sized Tenley E. Albright Performance Center - which caters to skaters at every level as well as hockey players. Also included is the Micheli Center for Sports Injury Prevention, which provides skaters with strength and training options, as well as a studio that meets the growing need for dance and choreography lessons. the Frieling Family Club Lounge offers a refined, private space with panoramic views of the Performance Center and The Club Library and Academic Center.

With a focus on providing ample space for skaters to cultivate their talent at every level, allowing racing to be hosted, the Club leadership has committed to expanding the original facility while maintaining the community it created in the New England area last century. In 2011, the Boston Skating Club realized that it was finally time to find a new location to house.

The original building, built in 1938, housed a single ice rink with a sound system that had been damaged by both humidity and use, making it impossible for a clear, seamless sound experience during training and events. The Skating Club has invested considerable time over the last several years in defining a plan and vision that would house the club and the community for the next century.

The goal was to create the best in-class skating facility with the best possible audio experience, supporting top figure skating events. This vision included an audio solution that provided the highest quality for both voice and music - especially important in the new 2,500-seat Performance Center, given the Club's capacity as a member of the US figure skating rink. This solution will provide a superior listening experience for performers on the ice, judges and audiences in the stands.

Professional Solution  BOSE

The solution for the sound was the result of a collaboration between a team of experts led by Doug Zeghibe, CEO of The Skating Club of Boston, and his team. Sound design expertise included senior design consultant Pete Thompson and engineer David Shapiro of ACT Associates, as well as the Ambient Sound team that oversaw and was responsible for the complete installation and programming of the rink system.

Daniel Govoni, Vice President for Northstar Project and Real Estate Management, oversaw the design and construction of the project. The resulting sound system incorporated the specific needs of many ice rinks, meeting rooms and public spaces into a unified solution, providing voice clarity while accurately representing the huge variety of music selected for each competing skater.

The Performance Center - the Olympic-sized centerpiece of The Skating Club's new facility - is equipped with ArenaMatch AM20 and AM40 speakers that provide 20 ° / 40 ° vertical coverage patterns respectively. A ShowMatch SMS118 subwoofer has been added to provide extended low frequency response up to 29 Hz and an adjustable PowerMatch PM8500N power amplifier provides concert sound quality to provide an Olympic-style sound system.

The West Figure Skating Training rink has seats for 1,500 spectators and is specially designed to support a variety of competitive figure skating events. Its system consists of ArenaMatch Utility AMU105 speakers specially made for belt coverage and high SPL, while it offers tonal balance in a compact design, and a ShowMatch SMS118 subwoofer. All are powered by PowerMatch PM4500N and PM8500N power amplifiers.

The East Multipurpose rink is a dual-use area for hockey and figure skating and features a ShowMatch audio system, which also includes a ShowMatch SMS118 subwoofer to support low frequency needs and is powered by a PowerMatch PM8500N power amplifier. In all public areas and meeting rooms, from The Micheli Center to The Club Lounge, Bose Professional products were used to provide background music and pagination and announcements, ultimately providing a complete and multidimensional audio solution for this Olympic-sized venue. .

The new home of the Skating Club is now a very prestigious facility and a source of great pride for this community, and the sound solution throughout the facility has exceeded everyone's hopes. As sound plays such a crucial role in skating events at every level, years of design and collective effort have paid off, resulting in a world-class home that every organization would be proud of.
