How a properly structured speaker system

 can transform commercial spaces?

It's easy to take for granted technologies that make everyday communication easier that positively impact our lives, and we encounter them all too often in both our public and private mobility. Think of music that lifts your mood in a retail store and morning announcements in the school hallways that fill you with energy.

All of these examples require a distributed speaker system to properly send the sound to the intended audience. Distributed speaker systems work by connecting multiple loudspeakers to a single high-powered amplifier and placing them across the desired amplification area. Hardware and switches on wall or ceiling mounted speakers allow the source sound to be adjusted to levels appropriate for the moment and situation.

Although is relatively easy to set up and manage, understanding distributed speaker systems requires training in the basics of how they work, what their capabilities are, how sound behaves in different spaces, and what type of system is right for each situation.

Activation

With a large array of loudspeakers, it is natural to assume that it also requires a large number of cables and a large amount of amplifiers to power them. In fact, one cable and amplifier — the same size as your home theater AV receiver — can do the job, saving significant time and money on configuration and installation.

The secret is the constant voltage system, which works very differently from conventional sound systems found in cinemas, where each loudspeaker is connected to its own amplifier channel. Instead, these types of systems connect loudspeakers like strings of Christmas lights, and each has a transformer that converts the 70-volt or 100-volt output — depending on the receiving location's power grid — to match the impedance and power of the next. This output capability allows a speaker cable to connect a loudspeaker network (an array of several loudspeakers) and minimizes power loss in the cables.

Constant voltage is achieved when a power supply supplies a uniform voltage throughout its load range. This allows it to maintain a constant, uniform, and predictable level regardless of variations in current or load resistance. An ideal source using a constant voltage should have little to no internal resistance, carry no current when the circuit is not loaded, and have a constant voltage regardless of any variation in current.

Calculating your needs

Achieving the benefits of setting up a speaker system requires a bit of math:

Multiply the number of speakers by the wattage of each to find the total power required by the amplifier. For example, if 100 speakers are 5 watts each, the total will be 500 watts. Then you will need an amplifier that can reach that power.

In fact, you'll probably want to go further, as simply matching the watts leaves no room for adding more speakers later. Practically and for flexibility in the future, add 25% more power to the amplifier per line in total. In this example, this means that a minimum power of 625 watts is ideal.

The calculation also depends on how high you set the power on the loudspeaker. Each 70 or 100 volt loudspeaker will have a power selector switch with a specified power such as 2.5W, 5W, 10W etc. This allows you to adjust the volume level of each speaker according to your needs and equipment. Just remember that every time you double the power, the volume at the listeners increases by three decibels.

Choosing the right equipment

Whatever your installation needs, Bose Professional can provide the most appropriate and reliable equipment to support it.

Amplifiers

• PowerMatch: The Bose Professional PowerMatch line of amplifiers delivers premium sound with a high level of expandability and customization. The three models feature multiple channel and power options, including a built-in DSP. An expansion slot supports input from optional digital sound cards.

•             PowerShare: Bose Professional PowerShare amplifiers support portable and fixed-installation applications by sharing the amplifier's total power across all output channels and moving it where it's needed. Built-in speaker processing options and band controllers eliminate the need for an additional signal processor in many installations.

•              FreeSpace: For music and paging applications, Bose Professional FreeSpace integrated band amplifiers enhance and optimize commercial applications. FreeSpace amplifiers feature dynamic EQ to improve sound quality and visual vocal paging for clear speech clarity

Speakers

• DesignMax: A complete range of speakers to enhance any space, Bose Professional DesignMax speakers combine performance and aesthetics for any commercial audio installation. Fifteen models also offer versatility, including coaxial two-way speakers and subwoofers. In-ceiling, surface-mounted and pendant models, as well as IP55-certified speakers for outdoor spaces, complete the multiple options. QuickHold mounting mechanisms make installation easy and the black and white versions allow for seamless integration with the decor and design of the space.

•              EdgeMax: Bose Professional EdgeMax in-ceiling speakers use Bose PhaseGuide technology with high-frequency compression drivers to fill rooms with the high-performance sound one would expect from larger surface-mount speakers.

•             ArenaMatch: Stadiums, arenas and outdoor entertainment centers are ideal venues for Bose Professional ArenaMatch speakers, which offer proven DeltaQ sound quality and outdoor installation flexibility. The IP55 waterproof rating protects it from the elements, adding a significant dose of durability..
